Rhyan Wardman MAppSc MBA

Head of Environment & Engineering

As Head of Environment & Engineering, Rhyan is responsible for identifying research commercialisation activity across engineering, materials science, physics, industrial design, architecture and environmental sectors at Te Herenga Waka. Rhyan supports the team as they work to find sustainable and evidence-driven solutions for future generations.

Rhyan has a strong track record in the entrepreneurial space, working and founding start-ups, right through to holding executive positions in multi-national corporates around the world. Rhyan has been working closely with Wellington UniVentures for some time as he is the director of one of our spin-out companies, Marama Labs. Rhyan connected with Marama Labs because of his winemaking and executive roles in the wine industry.

He has a strong governance background and is a member of the New Zealand Institute of Directors and was previously Board Director of Wine Marlborough. He also co-founded a winemaking facility in Marlborough, The Coterie, in 2018.

Rhyan is Director and Board Chair of the New Zealand regional airline, Sounds Air. In this capacity he has worked closely with researchers at Robinson Research Institute to develop Sound Air’s zero-emissions strategy, identifying a pathway to make the airline more sustainable.

Rhyan is an avid hiker and recently tackled the Te Araroa trail (South Island). Coming home feeling energised, Rhyan is excited to continue to grow Wellington UniVentures’ portfolio of innovation projects.
