ELTO - Intake 49

Through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), the New Zealand Government offers scholarships to government officials from eligible African and Asian countries to come to New Zealand for English language training.

Participants on English Language Training for Officials (NZELTO) courses improve their English through tailored courses that meet the needs of each intake, focusing on relevant topics or themes such as agriculture or trade. Courses are delivered through a unique combination of classroom-based learning together with memorable cultural and professional experiences.

The long-standing formula has seen many former participants go on to become leaders in their communities, industries and in some cases, their countries. Their positive experience in New Zealand makes them unofficial "ambassadors" for New Zealand, creating an international community of high-ranking government contacts that help keep the New Zealand flag flying.

In more detail

Participants on the 26-week NZELTO Asia programme strengthen their English language skills and their professional knowledge through an intensive programme of study relating to themes relevant to the development of their countries. Themes include: Education, Good Governance, Strengthening Resilience, Disaster Risk Management, Agriculture, Security, Trade and Renewable Energy.

Participants on the intensive 10-week NZELTO Africa programme also strengthen their English language skills while covering topics such as Governance and Diplomacy.

But what's common to both programmes is the unique combination of classroom-based learning together with memorable cultural and professional experiences. This approach has meant many former participants have experienced successful leaders in their communities, industries and countries.

In the Scholars' own words:

NZELTO Asia student

"One thing I will not forget when coming back to Vietnam was the relationship with my ELTO friends. The program created a strong connection not only with us but also between countries. We learned more about the culture and the people of other countries. We learned how to respect and cooperate with each other in studying, working and also in cooking". NZELTO Asia Student

NZELTO Asia Student

"This course is really exciting and interesting. I hope that the government of New Zealand continue this program to developing countries in Southeast Asia because it is a part of sustainable development goal. I strongly believe that I will use all information and knowledge to develop Cambodia". NZELTO Asia Student

NZELTO Africa Student

"The time I spent in New Zealand learning English through the ELTO Africa programme has been very useful for me. I have had the opportunity to be taught by English native speakers and in addition, I was in an English speaking country.  I have improved my English language skills due to the ELTO Africa programme, and this will be very useful in the future at my work." NZELTO Africa Student
