Flexible options for creating new ventures
We have created a range of flexible options for creating new ventures with us, suitable for different types of innovators. Our range of flexible models enable you to choose the approach that best suits you to create impact with your invention. We will help you decide and support you with the approach that makes the most sense.
Thirds Model
For researchers not seeking an active role in a new venture, or if your technology will be licensed.
You (and your collaborating researchers) will receive one third of the benefits, after costs are removed, at the point the venture is sold.
If you choose the Thirds Model, you’ll get:
- IP protection and management.
- Identification of partners, investors and start-up team members.
- Legal establishment of a new company.
- Shares held on your behalf.
- Contract research opportunities for your research lab.
- Access to PSAF non-dilutive funding.
What we need from you:
- Your time to support the development of the IP.
- Access to your research facilities to validate aspects of the IP.
- Your availability to front aspects of the commercialisation.
This option may suit you if:
- You’d prefer to focus on your research.
- You’d prefer not to take a risk on the technology.
- You want to stay at the University.
SCaRAB® Model
For researchers who want to actively participate in the creation of a new venture but would like some support.
If you choose the Shared Commercialisation Revenue and Benefits (SCaRAB) Model, you’ll get:
- IP protection and management.
- Market validation of opportunity.
- Identification of partners, investors and start-up team members.
- Legal establishment of a new company.
- Contract research opportunities for your research lab.
- Access to PSAF non-dilutive funding.
- The option to participate as much or as little as you like and consequently increase your benefit shareholding.
- Personalised professional development supporting your growth and participation in the start-up.
- Inventors shares either issued to you or held on your behalf by Wellington UniVentures.
What we need from you
- Time commitment over the 1-2 years that the project is in-house.
- Agreement that we will build a team and possibly include those people in the benefits as part of that journey.
- Access to the research facilities to validate aspects of the IP.
This model may suit you if:
- You want active involvement in the commercialisation and fair compensation for your contribution.
- You want to grow your own skills as an entrepreneur.
Independent Model
For researchers with aspirations to concentrate fully and independently on a new venture.
Under the Independent Model, you will enter a partnership with Wellington UniVentures. The IP will be assigned to you in return for shareholding in the venture, and you will continue to develop the opportunity independently. This approach allows you to take on more significant risk in the venture, and own significantly more of the upside. Wellington UniVentures won’t play an active role in the venture, but if you need our support, your venture can contract our services such as IP management or market research at commercial rates. Our shareholding in your venture will also allow access to New Zealand Innovation Booster funding.
What we need from you:
- You’ll need to move off campus, or access University facilities at full commercial rates.
- Your start up work can’t overlap with your day job.
- You’ll be fully responsible for capital raising and other commercial imperatives from the outset.
This model may suit you if:
- Full control of the venture is important to you.
- You want to actively front the venture.
- You are comfortable with taking the full risk.
